Funky Tut

March 06, 2010 // Link

Just back from seeing the King Tut swag show. I dug it a lot (haha, archeology joke). But to be honest, the whole thing did kinda seem like a pillage.

I liked seeing the gorgeous golden objects and hearing about their history. There was a cool moment where we came upon the exact coronet that Rachel had selected to copy years and years earlier for a theatre production. Cool coincidence.

If that crown has gone missing in the meantime, I’d like to assure the Royal Ontario Museum security staff that both Rachel and I have completely plausible alibis for the time it was stolen. Whenver that was, which obviously I don’t know, I’m just sayin’. Oh, and I’d like to retract that “pillage” comment above.

We opted for the Harrison Ford audio tour, and it was swell having the voice of Indiana Jones guide us throughout the exhibit. But alas Ford’s segments were inevitably followed by a fellow with the worst voice and presentation. His drawn out sibilance was comically bad: “I descended into the passsssage under the pyramidssssss, afraid I would become losssst in the darknessssss...”

As much as we were all bewitched by Harrison Ford’s amazing vocals, I noticed more and more people joining me in pressing “stop” on their audio wands as soon as it was the parseltongue drama queen’s turn to speak.

[aside]

I worked the words “bewitched,” “wand” and “parseltongue” into that last paragraph pretty slickly, I thought.

[end of aside]

Overall I had a swell time, and would recommend the exhibit. Just keep your thumb near the “stop” button.

Hey, guess who did not order an iPad today? Everyone here in Canada, that’s who.

By which I mean: why oh why do I have to wait?!

Happy Pi Day

March 14, 2010 // Link

My alarm is set for “1:59:26 p.m.,” and my life is set for “nerd.”

Update: As Colin pointed out, it would technically be 1:59:27, rounding up, but then the alarm would be set for after the event. And yes, I realize I’m implying that I can go from alarm buzz to full-on celebrating in half a second. Go go gadget speedy arms.

Of all the things that could get stuck in my head between 4 and 6 in the morning, it had to be the Slap Chop Rap?

Why is my brain mad at me?

One thousand books

March 29, 2010 // Link

Last night I helped Rachel finish her goal of collecting over one thousand books for the Harry Potter book drive in just 10 days.

Being both highly competitive and highly capable, naturally she blew right past the 1,000 book goal and collected 1,118 books!

Basically, books books books everywhere books:

P1000850

That sure was a very large (but oddly suitable) heap o’ books in her living room. Both she and the books seemed very comfortable with each other.

Then again, I suspect she’s got that many or more of her own books sitting on the shelves. And this is someone who’s a frequent reader of digital books on her ereader, so as you can imagine she’s just about my most reading-est friend.

1,000+ books in just 10 days. Well done, R.!

Edit: Rachel had submitted 1,118 as her official count for the competition, but then found two more boxes of donations she’d missed. The final count was actually 1,176 books.
