Surprise!

We held a surprise party for my sister’s birthday yesterday, and it was a whopper. Tons of family, friends, food and dancing, with a great band and a great event space. I love that my family does these sorts of things big.

Remind me to tell you some time about the rented club and bus for my 16th.

I didn’t take a lot of photos with my own camera so I don’t have any yet from when the dance floor filled up, but I was still snapping up snapshots earlier in the night:

My family put together some posters with mildly embarrassing photos of Kelley through the years, grouped by theme (like “school days” and “80’s hair”). The band was fantastic and I’d recommend ‘em highly. They even learned a special song just for the big day, and played it as an encore while Kelley and two of her oldest friends got up on stage to join in.
The only disappointment of the night was the shoddy sound system at the Uxbridge Music Hall. They’d yanked out the usual amplifier (so the sound guy could use it at another event elsewhere—nice use of town funds, dude) and stuck us with a faulty one that wasn’t up to the event. It couldn’t drive most of the speakers, and overloaded constantly. But the band rolled with it and put on a great show anyway.
I love throwing surprise parties, and this was definitely the largest one so far. I dig the stealth of the preparation. You get all the fun of a party, plus ninja aspects. It’s win-win.
Shoes and ponies

It took a week and a half to get there, but last night I finally got to celebrate my good pal Rachel’s birthday with her. Naturally it was an event that included books and cake and lots of the colour pink. I was even able to work things like ponies and dancing and Nancy Drew into the theme.
I know my friends well.
A swell time, and my first (albeit very tiny) party in my new digs.
